Sail and rock climb in the Calanques of Marseille

April to June
5 days| 4 nights
Level 2
Eco-score 4/5

What you will experience

Take the helm at sunset between the 3 islands of the Riou archipelago, skirting 70-metre-high limestone cliffs.
Sail in the heart of the Mediterranean, 12 to 18 NM per day, lulled by the lapping of the waves and the salty scent of the open sea.
Climb the emblematic walls of Sormiou and Morgiou, up to 50 metres high, with plunging views over the turquoise waters and coves accessible only by sea.
Sleep at anchor, far from the lights of the city, and wake to the sound of the gulls singing and the wind blowing across the deck.
Combine sea and land in 5 days, combining sailing in the Figuerolles cove, swimming, climbing in the Calanques national park and hiking on the Frioul islands.
Take a sailboat to off-the-beaten-track climbing walls, inaccessible from land, to climb in unspoilt wilderness.

DAY 1 / 5
Accommodation
Sailing boat
Navigation
12 MN

Welcome aboard the yacht at 2pm at the Port des Corbières in Marseille. A brief presentation of the boat, settling in on board, a quick meet-and-greet, a quick safety briefing, and then we cast off for the Calanque de Sormiou.

This first sail will be an opportunity for everyone to get their bearings on board, discover the basics of how the boat works, take the helm and try their hand at trimming the sails. If you already have some experience, we'll take advantage of this sailing to assess your level together and plan the points to be covered during the trip to help you progress.

This will also be an opportunity to admire the coast and the passage between the islands of the Riou archipelago, arriving at the anchorage before sunset. Dinner prepared on board and overnight at anchor.

DAY 2 / 5
Accommodation
Sailing boat

We wake up early on the boat, enjoy breakfast and then our first task of the day is to disembark! We board the boat's small tender to meet our climbing guide, a specialist of the Calanques, on Sormiou beach.

The choice of sector will have been decided the day before, according to the profile and level of the group. Approach walk and day on the rock, in the paradisiacal setting of the Calanques. Initiation for beginners, personalised coaching for the more experienced... the instructor adapts to each individual. Picnic lunch at the foot of the routes.

Return to the boat in the late afternoon for a well-deserved aperitif and dinner! Night at anchor.

DAY 3 / 5

18 MN

Wake up to the sound of the sea, have breakfast and off you go for a day at sea! Sailing to the Bec de l'Aigle, along the coast to admire the impressive relief of the Calanques, before dropping anchor at midday in the Figuerolles cove.

After a good lunch (and a swim for the brave!), we weigh anchor and hoist the sails to begin our gentle return to Marseille: heading for the Riou Archipelago or the Calanque de Marseilleveyre, where we'll spend the night at anchor.

For this day dedicated to sailing, the emphasis will be on teaching and practice, adapting the roles to both the desires and the level of each person.

DAY 4 / 5
Accommodation
Sailing boat

From our anchorage at Riou or Marseilleveyre, a short morning sail to another of the Calanques' iconic climbing areas (Morgiou, Sugiton or the Riou archipelago, depending on conditions).

Disembarkation for a day of 100% climbing guided by the guide, with routes adapted to the level of the group: technical progression for the initiated, initiation for beginners. Picnic break at the foot of the cliffs, then back on the routes in the afternoon.

Return to the boat at the end of the day and sail to a sheltered anchorage for the night. A convivial evening on board.

DAY 5 / 5

Navigation

Distance

On the programme for this final day: sail to the Frioul islands for a short hike and lunch break ashore.

Back to the boat for a final short sail to the Port des Corbières in Marseille.

We take the time to stow our gear, help clean the boat and have a group debriefing before disembarking at 5pm at the latest. It's time to say goodbye and head back to the station. We've made the most of our time on land and at sea!

What kind of people usually join Wildhartt expeditions ?

You don’t need to be a top athlete or mountain expert to feel at home. Most Wildhartt participants are between 25 and 60 years old, with a balanced mix of women and men.

Many join solo or in small groups of two or three. They often live in cities and are looking for a meaningful brea some time to reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy something real.

They usually have a regular movement practice (hiking, running, yoga...), but not with a competitive mindset. They’re in good shape, but don’t necessarily have technical skills. What brings them together is a shared desire to disconnect, observe, learn, and experience nature in a more grounded, accessible way.

If that speaks to you, you'll feel right at home. The group spirit is kind and open, and the pace adapts to everyone.
