DAY 1 / 11
Accommodation
Base camp
On the programme
Gîte
Welcome at Kuusamo airport by your guides Caj and Katja, your packraft instructors and nature guides for the next few days. Transfer by minibus (40 min) to our base camp, a traditional chalet on the edge of a peaceful lake surrounded by boreal forest.

Settle into your comfortable accommodation and enjoy dinner in a traditional kota. Around the fire, Caj and Katja will introduce you to the programme, safety instructions and basic techniques. First immersion in the Nordic atmosphere, with a sky that, depending on the season, can already be tinged with the light of the midnight sun or the first aurora borealis.
DAY 2 / 11
Accommodation
Bivouac
Distance
4h

Transfer to the village of Käylä and first launch in the middle of nature. The morning is devoted to an introductory whitewater course: river reading, basic manoeuvres and safety.

After a few practice runs on a class I rapid, the first lake is lined with pine and silver birch trees. We then begin the descent of the Kitkajoki, with its clear water and green reflections. We set up our first bivouac near a laavu (Finnish shelter) on the riverbank. There's still time to practise manoeuvring on the gentle currents before dinner under the stars.

DAY 3 / 11
Accommodation
Bivouac
Distance
10km
The descent continues with three easy rapids (class I) to warm up. Arrival at Peurakoski (class II): reconnaissance from the bank, navigation plan, then safe passage.

A little further on, we cross the Saarikoski (class II). Set up camp near a shelter, have lunch, then carry the packrafts empty for 2 km to practise on several repeating rapids: Peurakoski, Saarikoski and Harjakoski.
DAY 4 / 11
Accommodation
Bivouac
Distance
12km

Right from the start, a class II rapid gets you going (portage possible). The river then widens into a series of calm lakes, perfect for watching waterfowl. Cross the Niskakoski (class II) and then cross Lake Jyrävänjärvi.

A portage of Myllykoski (class III) is compulsory, except for the most experienced. This emblematic site is home to an old restored wooden mill, a vestige of the days when water power was used to grind cereals. We'll take the opportunity to stop for lunch and explore the surrounding area, where footbridges and pontoons offer great views of the rapids.

In the afternoon, we walk around 1.5 km along the Karhunkierros trail, a legendary hiking route in Finland. The route takes us past the Aallokkokoski (class IV), a powerful rapid with high waves, and on to the spectacular Jyrävä waterfall (class V), some fifteen metres high, which flows into a pool surrounded by pine trees. We set up camp next to a traditional hut.

DAY 5 / 11
Accommodation
Bivouac
Distance
8km
Descent of the most beautiful section of the Kitkajoki.
This stage takes us down the most spectacular section of the Kitkajoki, where the river enters narrow, steep-sided canyons carved out of the sandstone by thousands of years of erosion. The rapids encountered today are gentle (class I), ideal for enjoying the scenery to the full.

We made numerous stops along the way to observe the wildlife and take time to admire the scenery: the play of light on the cliffs, the lodgepole pines clinging to the rocks, and the clear waters reflecting the sky. At the end of the route, we reach the Pähkänä lookout, a panoramic promontory that has become famous as one of the region's most emblematic spots. From here, the view plunges down a meander of the river, surrounded by conifer-covered cliffs.

The bivouac is nearby. At the end of the day, a short optional hike takes you to higher ground to enjoy new views over the valley, before returning to share a meal around the fire.
DAY 6 / 11
Accommodation
Bivouac
Distance
8km

Navigation on a calm stretch, through forests of hundred-year-old pines, to the confluence with the Oulankajoki. Depending on the conditions (current, wind), you can combine paddling and walking to reach the evening shelter.

DAY 7 / 11
Accommodation
bivouac
Distance
10 km
This stage begins with a walk along a small road that gradually moves away from the river. After a few kilometres, we take a forest track once used for logging, offering clear sections of canopy. The route then joins a narrower path winding through pine and birch to the Aitanitty hut, a former stopping-off point for hikers.

We cross the river to reach a rustic shelter on a small sandy beach. Ideal for a unique bivouac: unobstructed views over the course of the Oulankajoki, the possibility of a swim in summer, and an often spectacular sunset over the surrounding forest.
DAY 8 / 11
Accommodation
Bivouac
Distance
10 km

A short secret trail back to the Karhunkierros, one of Finland's most famous treks. Stop at Ansakämppä for lunch overlooking the river, then continue to a class V rapid where the camp is set up just downstream.

DAY 9 / 11
Accommodation
Bivouac
Distance
19 km

Navigation resumes, this time on a stretch without rapids but with a steady current. The river winds through a narrow canyon, with sheer cliffs and forests as far as the eye can see. Bivouac by a rustic shelter.

DAY 10 / 11

Distance
6 km

Final paddle to Huotinniemi. One-hour transfer to Kuusamo and return to base camp. Afternoon free to visit the town or relax before a final dinner.

Katja and I (Caj) are nature guides and have been packrafting in the Nordic regions for almost 10 years. Some people call me the Finnish Viking because of my big beard. I like telling jokes and I have a rather quirky sense of humour, like most Finns. Katja and I are also packraft instructors and have taken the White Water Rescue Technician - Pro course.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recharge my devices during the shipment?

Not during the bivouac. Remember to bring an external battery. Refills available at the basecamps.

Is there any portage involved?

Yes, some sections require you to carry your packraft and equipment for 1 to 2 km. The packraft can be stored in a rucksack with the rest of your gear.

What language will be used during your stay?

Briefings and activities are mainly in English, but your guides also speak Finnish and understand some French.

How comfortable can you expect your bivouac to be?

The campsites are rustic: no electricity or showers, dry toilets at some sites, and meals cooked on wood fires or stoves.

When is the best time to come?

Most expeditions take place between June and September, when the days are long and the temperatures mild (10-20°C). From June to September, the days vary between 10 and 20°C, and the nights between 5 and 10°C. River water remains cool (6-12°C). Bring warm, waterproof clothing.

What do classes I to V mean for rapids?

This is an international scale: Class I-II: easy to moderate, light to medium waves Class III: more powerful rapids, requiring precise manoeuvres Class IV-V: very technical or dangerous, generally carried during this holiday.

What happens if I don't want to cross a rapid?

No problem: most of them can be portaged (avoided on foot). The guides will always decide on the safest solution according to the level of the group.

Can we meet wild animals?

Yes, the region is home to reindeer, elk, beavers, otters and many birds. Bears are present but very discreet and avoid humans. The guides know how to secure food.

Are instalment payment options available?

Yes, that's right! At checkout, you can choose the Alma option to pay for your booking in 2x, 3x or 4x. All you have to do is select Alma at checkout and follow the instructions. It's simple, fast and secure.

Can I privatise this expedition for my group?

Yes, all our expeditions can be privatised for a group already formed, on the dates of your choice.

To make your request, go to the expedition that interests you and click on "Privatise the expedition". We'll take care of the rest!

At Wildhartt, nature is our playground, rain or shine. Rain, snow or wind: our guides adapt the itinerary, activities and accommodation to guarantee you the best possible experience.
Unless safety is at stake (storm, avalanche, flood...).

In this exceptional case, we can cancel an expedition, at least one week before departure.
If this happens:
→ You can postpone your adventure at no cost,
→ Or receive a full refund.

What kind of people usually join Wildhartt expeditions ?

You don’t need to be a top athlete or mountain expert to feel at home. Most Wildhartt participants are between 25 and 60 years old, with a balanced mix of women and men.

Many join solo or in small groups of two or three. They often live in cities and are looking for a meaningful brea some time to reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy something real.

They usually have a regular movement practice (hiking, running, yoga...), but not with a competitive mindset. They’re in good shape, but don’t necessarily have technical skills. What brings them together is a shared desire to disconnect, observe, learn, and experience nature in a more grounded, accessible way.

If that speaks to you, you'll feel right at home. The group spirit is kind and open, and the pace adapts to everyone.
