Distance
4km
We meet at 12 noon at Marignac - Saint-Béat SNCF station, easily accessible from Toulouse.

A car transfer (about 1 hour) will take us to Arties, a typical village in the Val d'Aran, recognisable by its stone houses and slate roofs. A 30-minute shuttle bus then takes us to the entrance to the Aigüestortes National Park.

The walk begins at the edge of the forest, then crosses alpine meadows and clearings. The climb to tonight's Mountain hut is on a mountain path, at a pace suited to the group. This first stage allows you to get your bearings in varied terrain (combes, regular slopes) and to learn the basics of roaming: effort management, rucksack organisation and individual autonomy.

Settle into the Mountain hut, pack up and brief for the next day. Night in a guarded Mountain hut.

We pass through areas of rhododendron before beginning our ascent of the Pic de Montardo (2,833 m). The climb progresses through clearings, grassy slopes and then more mineral ridges.

From the summit, the panorama opens out onto the Encantats massif, known for its exceptional concentration of over 300 glacial lakes scattered across a landscape of pale granite. It's a great vantage point for understanding the geography of the massif and spotting the surrounding valleys and passes.

Climbing to the summit is optional: if necessary, a more direct route allows you to reach the Mountain hut without going over the summit.

Depending on the season, there may be snow on the descent. We then return to our Mountain hut, set in a mineral atmosphere typical of the heart of the massif.

We make our way through flower-filled valleys, granite areas and possible snowy stretches, depending on the conditions.

The route climbs steadily to the port of Colomers (2,600 m), a natural gateway to the famous Colomers cirque, one of the richest lakes in the massif. The landscape alternates between ridges, high-altitude lakes and glacial valleys.

Descent to the comfortable Mountain hut above Lac Major. At the end of the day, time to rest, organise your equipment and check the weather to prepare for the rest of the itinerary.

A day at altitude with the chance to climb the Pic de la Ratera (2,860 m), the central peak of the Aigüestortes Park. The route varies between grassy areas, more mineral passages and possible névés, depending on the season.

At the summit, there is a wide panoramic view of the massif, with numerous glacial lakes scattered in all directions.

The climb is optional. Depending on the weather and the shape of the group, a shorter option may be chosen.

Careful descent to the Mountain hut. This area is ideal for spotting wildlife: marmots, isards and the occasional bearded vulture.

A shorter stage to help you recover, while remaining in the heart of the Encantats massif, surrounded by high granite peaks.

We climb up to the Col de la Ratera, then drop down into the Saborédo valley. The descent is a little steeper but relatively short, requiring carefulness and sure footing.

We reach our Mountain hut, set in a valley suspended on the edge of a lake. This is a human-sized Mountain hut, offering a more intimate atmosphere. The afternoon is a chance to relax, enjoy the surroundings and take time to organise for the last major stage.

We set off early to reach the Sendrosa pass (2,400 m) via a wilder route. Our route takes us through an environment that alternates between valleys, ridges and little-travelled areas.

The gradual descent takes us back to more wooded landscapes, with the return of hooked pines. Marmots and chamois are not uncommon in this area. We also pass by old mines and quarries used in the construction of the Colomers dam, bearing witness to the local history.

At the end of the day, transfer to Escunhau, a village in the Val d'Aran. Settle into your hostel and enjoy a dinner in a convivial local restaurant.
DAY 7 / 7
After breakfast at the hostel, it's time to pack up before taking the organised transfer to Marignac - Saint-Béat station for the 10.50am train to Toulouse.

This is the perfect opportunity to round off the week and review the main points covered during the tour.

Frequently asked questions

Are transfers included?

Yes, transfers by mini-bus, taxi and shuttle to the Aigüestortes National Park are included in the price of the stay. The meeting point is at Marignac-St Béat station, easily accessible from Toulouse, and all logistics are taken care of until the return journey.

Who is this expedition for?

This tour is aimed at hikers who already have some experience of mountain walking. The days will include some changes in altitude, passages at high altitudes and sometimes snow, depending on the season. You'll need to be able to carry a rucksack for several days at a time, and to hike a variety of trails. The expedition is open to anyone in good physical condition who is motivated and ready to progress independently.

Is it a technical hike?

This is not mountaineering, but a challenging mountain trek. Some sections may include snow or steep slopes, depending on the conditions. The guide adapts the itinerary, explains snow progression techniques if necessary and ensures the safety of the group. The emphasis is on reading the terrain, orientation and collective rhythm management.

How are meals organised?

Dinners and breakfasts are taken in Mountain huts. Picnics are organised for the walking days. Meals are simple, hearty and adapted to the effort involved. Evenings are a time for sharing, debriefing and preparing for the next stage.

Are we really going to see a lot of lakes?

Yes, the Encantats massif is famous for its incredible density of glacial lakes. Throughout the traverse, we move from basin to basin, between major lakes and more secret lakes, with permanent panoramas of strings of turquoise waters and granite peaks.

Is altitude a factor to be taken into account?

Yes, some stages take place above 2,500 metres. The itinerary is designed for gradual progress, and the guide adapts the pace to encourage proper acclimatisation. Altitude is part of the experience, but it is carefully managed.

Where do we sleep during the crossing?

Overnight stays are in comfortable mountain huts in the heart of the Aigüestortes National Park. The Mountain huts have showers, duvets or blankets, warm communal areas and often Wi-Fi. It is usually possible to recharge your mobile phone. Dormitories are shared, in the friendly atmosphere typical of Pyrenean Mountain huts.

Are instalment payment options available?

Yes, that's right! At checkout, you can choose the Alma option to pay for your booking in 2x, 3x or 4x. All you have to do is select Alma at checkout and follow the instructions. It's simple, fast and secure.

Can I privatise this expedition for my group?

To make your request, go to the expedition that interests you and click on "Privatise the expedition". We'll take care of the rest!

What happens if the weather is bad?

At Wildhartt, nature is our playground, rain or shine. Rain, snow or wind: our guides adapt the itinerary, activities and accommodation to guarantee you the best possible experience.
Unless safety is at stake (storm, avalanche, flood...).

In this exceptional case, we can cancel an expedition, at least one week before departure.
If this happens:
→ You can postpone your adventure at no cost,
→ Or receive a full refund.

What kind of people usually join Wildhartt expeditions ?

You don’t need to be a top athlete or adventure expert to feel at home. Most Wildhartt participants are between 25 and 60 years old, with a balanced mix of women and men.

Many join solo or in small groups of two or three. They often live in cities and are looking for a meaningful brea some time to reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy something real.

They usually have a regular movement practice (hiking, running, yoga...), but not with a competitive mindset. They’re in good shape, but don’t necessarily have technical skills. What brings them together is a shared desire to disconnect, observe, learn, and experience nature in a more grounded, accessible way.

If that speaks to you, you'll feel right at home. The group spirit is kind and open, and the pace adapts to everyone.

What does the price of a Wildhartt adventure include?

At Wildhartt, transparency is essential. The price of your expedition reflects a clear breakdown of costs:

  • 30% for our guides, the mainstays of every adventure.
  • 35% for accommodation and meals, essential for your comfort.
  • 10% for equipment and transport, to guarantee safety and fluidity.
  • 25% for organisation and logistics, from first contact to the end of the expedition.
  • 1% for the rewilding of Europe, a concrete commitment to give back to nature what it gives us.

Our priority: to offer you a quality experience, with complete clarity.
