What you will experience

A 5-day tour of the Queyras, punctuated by convivial evenings in mountain huts and gîtes, in one of the wildest nature parks in the Alps.

Discover the village of Saint-Véran, perched at an altitude of 2040 m, recognised as the highest inhabited village in Europe and nicknamed "where the roosters peck at the stars".

Picnic on the banks of Grand Laus, a lake suspended at 2600 m, with the shadow of Mont Viso in the background.

Reach the Pic de Caramantran at 3025 m and enjoy a circular panorama of the French and Italian Alps.

We meet at 9:00 a.m. in Ville Vieille for the start of our adventure. After a short briefing, we begin our first hike into the Queyras.

Early on, we admire the Demoiselle Coiffée, a striking geological formation. The trail passes through a typical alpine village of stone houses and slate roofs, then climbs gradually through forests and hamlets.

Panoramic views open up as we gain height. For those who wish, an optional climb to a nearby peak adds an extra challenge.

We end the day in Saint-Véran, Europe’s highest village (2040 m), known for its sun dials and rich heritage. Overnight at Auberge Costebelle, with a traditional dinner and cozy mountain atmosphere.

We start gently along a meandering path through alpine meadows and streams. As we climb, the vegetation gives way to rock and scree.

We stop at the Chapelle de Clausis (2400 m), before reaching the remains of an ancient copper mine dating back to prehistoric times. The route continues to the Col de Chamoussière, and, for the keenest hikers, to the Pic de Caramantran (3025 m), offering breathtaking 360° views of the French and Italian Alps.

We then descend to Refuge Agnel (2580 m), a modern and welcoming hut at the foot of the pass. Dinner and a restful night surrounded by silence and stars.

Today’s route crosses the wild Bouchouse Valley, where streams, alpine pastures and larch forests create a constantly changing landscape.

The scenery alternates between open ridges and peaceful meadows. An optional ascent of the Pain de Sucre (3208 m) rewards the effort with a stunning view of the sharp Taillante ridge and surrounding peaks.

In the afternoon, we descend towards Abriès, a charming village where a welcoming gîte and a hearty dinner await.

We head towards the Grand Laus Lake (2600 m), a sparkling alpine lake set among rugged peaks. Along the way, we pass the small abandoned hamlet of Malrif, where a lonely chapel still overlooks the valley.

At the lake, we enjoy a panoramic picnic and the view of Mont Viso on the horizon. You can also explore nearby hidden lakes or make a short climb to a nearby peak for another angle on the Queyras.

Our descent leads us to Aiguilles, known for its elegant “Belles Américaines” houses built by villagers who returned home after making their fortune abroad.

This final stage follows a balcony trail with wide-open views over the Queyras valleys. We pass through picturesque hamlets where time seems to stand still.

The path then leads to Château-Queyras, with its medieval fortress perched dramatically on a rocky spur. After a short visit, we descend gently to Ville Vieille, our starting point.

A final shared lunch, a few laughs, and time to reflect on the adventure, before saying goodbye, filled with the spirit of the Queyras.

Included

Guiding: Throughout your stay, you'll be accompanied by a passionate mountain guide from the Queyras region.

Accommodation: You will sleep in mountain huts, gîtes and inns depending on the stage (see itinerary), always in a shared room (single beds).

Meals: All meals are provided, from the first evening meal to the last picnic.

Not included

Transport to and from the starting point of your adventure.

Any personal expenses (drinks, snacks, etc.)

Everything that is not included in "what is included".

What level should you expect

Level 2

You should be at least 18 years old to participate

You are capable of hiking for around 5 hours per day with an average elevation gain of 1,000 meters.
You will carry your own backpack during the daily hikes (no porters are provided).
You are comfortable hiking for several days in a row, carrying a light backpack containing your sleeping gear for staying in mountain huts throughout your trip.

Do you want to avoid traffic jams and travel in peace? The train is your ally. You can reach Ville Vieille by train and bus:

Free parking is available in Ville Vieille, the expedition's meeting point, where you can leave your vehicle for the whole trip.

Do consider carpooling: a WhatsApp group will be set up 10 days before departure so you can organise this with the other participants.

If the minimum number of participants is not reached, we will give you a full refund.

Departure is confirmed 15 days in advance for adventures lasting more than 4 days. Departure is confirmed 7 days prior for adventures lasting less than 4 days.

In the case of a deposit, the remaining amount will be debited from your account before departure.

Frequently asked questions

What essential equipment should I bring?

Once you've registered, you'll receive a full list of the equipment you need to take with you. You'll also have the chance to talk to the guide well before you set off, so you can ask any questions you might have and have plenty of time to prepare.

How comfortable are the Mountain huts?

Accommodation is in shared dormitories, often with bunk beds and blankets provided. Each Mountain hut has toilets and showers, some with hot water. However, there are no facilities for recharging electronic equipment, so bring an external battery if you need to. The atmosphere is simple, warm and authentic, in keeping with the spirit of mountain huts.

How heavy will my bagpack be?

For this trip, you'll only need to take the bare essentials with you, as you'll be sleeping every night in a comfortable mountain hut, with blankets provided. Your rucksack should weigh no more than 8kg (we recommend a maximum of 20% of your body weight).

Are instalment payment options available?

Yes, that's right! At checkout, you can choose the Alma option to pay for your booking in 2x, 3x or 4x. All you have to do is select Alma at checkout and follow the instructions. It's simple, fast and secure.

Can I privatise this expedition for my group?

Yes, all our expeditions can be privatised for a group already formed, on the dates of your choice.

What kind of people usually join Wildhartt expeditions ?

You don’t need to be a top athlete or adventure expert to feel at home. Most Wildhartt participants are between 25 and 60 years old, with a balanced mix of women and men.

Many join solo or in small groups of two or three. They often live in cities and are looking for a meaningful brea some time to reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy something real.

They usually have a regular movement practice (hiking, running, yoga...), but not with a competitive mindset. They’re in good shape, but don’t necessarily have technical skills. What brings them together is a shared desire to disconnect, observe, learn, and experience nature in a more grounded, accessible way.

If that speaks to you, you'll feel right at home. The group spirit is kind and open, and the pace adapts to everyone.

What happens if the weather is bad?

At Wildhartt, nature is our playground, rain or shine. Rain, snow or wind: our guides adapt the itinerary, activities and accommodation to guarantee you the best possible experience.
Unless safety is at stake (storm, avalanche, flood...).

In this exceptional case, we can cancel an expedition, at least one week before departure.
If this happens:
