The Stevenson Trail, a timeless adventure in the footsteps of a writer and his strong-willed donkey named Modestine..
The GR70, also known as the Stevenson Trail, is a 272 km hike through volcanoes, mountains, and valleys in the heart of the Massif Central.
Discover the Stevenson Trail in the Cévennes National Park, a secluded and wild place offering an exceptional setting for a multi-day trek, with or without a donkey.
The concept of “donkey trekking in the Cévennes” is inspired by the historical 1878 journey of author Robert Louis Stevenson and his donkey, Modestine.
Famous for his works like “Treasure Island” and “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, Stevenson also chronicled his 12-day trek with his donkey from Monastier-sur-Gazeille to Saint-Jean-du-Gard.
Suffering from tuberculosis in the 1870s, Stevenson traveled the world in search of a more favorable and milder climate. This quest led him across the United States, the Pacific Islands, and Europe.
This 12-day trek on the GR70 crosses four French départements, stretching from the southern Massif Central to the northern Gard.
As you journey from Le Puy-en-Velay to Saint-Jean-du-Gard, you’ll pass through charming villages, picturesque hamlets, volcanic plateaus, chestnut forests, and breathtaking views along the Cévennes ridge.
This itinerary is flexible. You can choose to complete it in stages or only cover a portion for a shorter trip. Several train stations along the route make it easy to customize your trek. And don’t worry about accommodations, numerous gîtes and guesthouses warmly welcome hikers along the way.
This trek invites you to disconnect, slow down, and immerse yourself in the heart of wild nature and local communities.
Whether you travel solo or with a small group of adventurers, with or without a donkey, the Stevenson Trail is ideal for a complete nature immersion.
The fully marked path ensures safety for hikers and respects the surrounding environment.
A donkey is the ultimate trekking companion! Walking at their pace lets you savor the present moment. Take the time to admire the vast landscapes around you and listen to their gentle steps. A donkey integrates perfectly into the Cévennes ecosystem, allowing you to explore breathtaking scenery while sharing unique moments with the local wildlife.
The best time to plan your trip is between May and October, ensuring comfortable travel conditions.
During these warmer months, the Cévennes transform beautifully, and accommodations are open and easily accessible. Spring and autumn are particularly ideal, offering vibrant blooms or fiery autumn foliage alongside pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.
While summer is also a beautiful season for hiking, it’s perfect for meeting fellow adventurers.
Winter, though picturesque with snow, presents challenges due to cold and wet conditions, making the trail less accessible.
Pack sturdy hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing, a water bottle, and a light backpack and you’re ready to go.
A guided, point-to-point hike retracing the footsteps of the writer and his endearing companion, Modestine the donkey.
Led by a passionate guide, you'll explore the wild landscapes of the Cévennes while uncovering the stories and secrets of this historic route. And of course, you won’t be alone, friendly donkeys will join you on the journey, making for unforgettable moments shared in a small group.
Along the way, you'll pass through authentic villages and hamlets, sleep in traditional guesthouses, and spend two magical nights bivouacking under the stars, for a truly immersive experience.
