We meet at 9am in Vallouise, where our guide Olivier will introduce us to the tour over a welcome coffee.

Once we've arrived at the Mountain hut and settled in, we'll concentrate on learning the basics of snow and glacier climbing. We'll be going over cramponing, roping up, ice axe use and crevasse exercises.

We finish the day with a delicious tartiflette to enjoy the warm atmosphere of the Mountain hut.

After this first experience on a glacier, we return to the Ailefroide valley in the afternoon, where we spend our second night in a warm, family-run gîte.

Once at the Mountain hut, we enjoy a panoramic view of the glacier, the east face of the Ailefroide and the tip of Celse Nière from the terrace.

After settling in, we take the afternoon to brush up on our mountaineering skills and, more specifically, learn the basics of crevasse rescue.

After the effort, the comfort: we spend the evening and the night at the Mountain hut and enjoy a good mountain meal before going to bed.

This climb will be an opportunity to put into practice the mountaineering techniques we learnt the day before.

After the climb, we'll head back down to the Sélé Mountain hut for a rest after the day's exploits.

It's under a starry sky that we begin this final day of our expedition. Our objective today is to climb the eastern summit of the Ailefroide (3848m), a veritable fortress of stone and ice.

After a few days climbing and immersing ourselves in the high mountains, we return to the Vallouise valley in the late afternoon for a drink to round off this wonderful expedition.

Coming from the flat country of Belgium and being a mountain guide sounds like a bit of an oxymoron, but here I am, Olivier , 33 years old. Very enthusiastic about the idea of getting off the beaten track, it's with boundless enthusiasm that I'll be guiding you through the magical world of the high mountains, far from the hustle and bustle of the valleys. It's with the same enthusiasm that I'll be sharing the conviviality of the post-race moments over a good beer... Belgian!

Frequently asked questions

How comfortable are the Mountain huts?

Mountain huts offer simple but warm comfort. You'll sleep in dormitories equipped with beds and blankets; you'll need to bring a meat bag for reasons of hygiene and personal comfort.

Do I need to have done mountaineering before?

No, this expedition is for beginners who want to discover mountaineering. No previous experience is required, but you need to be in good physical condition to enjoy the adventure to the full. If you have any doubts about your level, don't hesitate to contact us to discuss it.

Will there be a telephone network?

Network coverage is rare and variable in the high mountains, depending heavily on your mobile operator. Sometimes you'll be able to pick up a signal briefly, but most of the time you'll be completely disconnected, which is part and parcel of the experience.

Are rucksacks carried between the various Mountain huts?

There is no porterage between stages, so each participant is responsible for his or her own bag. To guarantee your comfort and keep your equipment as light as possible, we'll organise a check-up of your bag together on the first day.

What equipment do I need to bring and what is provided?

We'll provide you with all the technical equipment you need for mountaineering, such as a harness, helmet and belay gear. All you need to bring with you is your own technical clothing, good crampon boots, a rucksack of around 35 litres, plus a few basic items for the night and hygiene. A full list will be sent to you as soon as you register.

What will be the approximate weight of our rucksack?

Your rucksack will weigh around 8 kilos, thanks to the nights spent in Mountain huts or gites. You'll only need the essentials: appropriate clothing, minimal toiletries and a few accessories to protect you from the cold.

Can I privatise this expedition for my group?

Yes, all our expeditions can be privatised for a group already formed, on the dates of your choice.

To make your request, go to the expedition that interests you and click on "Privatise the expedition". We'll take care of the rest!

Are instalment payment options available?

Yes, absolutely! At checkout, you can choose Alma to pay for your booking in 2, 3 or 4 instalments. Just select Alma during checkout and follow the instructions. It’s simple, fast, and secure.
