We're meeting at 2pm at the Maison Forestière in Salm to set off for our adventure in the Vosges.

From the hamlet of Salm, we'll set off for our first immersion in deer territory. We'll make our way through forests and wetlands, learning how to spot signs of their presence (tracks, rubs, leashes) and how to move around discreetly. The route takes in the Etang du Coucou, then the glacial peat bog of La Maxe, before reaching the Haute Loge, the highest point of the day (934 m).

At the end of the afternoon, equipped with suitable optical equipment (night vision binoculars), we went to a listening area to try our first observation. The different types of slab will be explained and listened to in the field. The evening meal is a fondue shared at the bivouac.

After breakfast, we leave our bivouac and descend to the Rabodeau stream. The climb back up to Lac de la Maix takes us to a place steeped in legend and ideal for wildlife watching. The day is spent analysing the terrain and learning about the deer's life cycle, in particular the annual development of its antlers.

The afternoon is spent on the ridge, in a wooded area dotted with rocks and clearings. We continue our listening and take the time to observe discreetly, conditions permitting. Dinner, based on freeze-dried products, is taken at the second bivouac, in an area suited to the tranquillity of the group and discretion with regard to the fauna.

A final listen is possible at dawn, which is often a good time to hear the bellowing. We then set off on our return journey along the sentier des Passeurs, heading towards the Bruche valley. We'll take a break on the Chatte Pendue plateau, which offers a clear view of the surrounding forests.

We return to the hamlet of Salm in the early afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a rate for teenagers?

Teenagers aged 14 and over can take part in this expedition, provided they are accompanied by a parent. The price for 14-16 year-olds is €310.

What equipment should we take with us?

Once your enrolment has been confirmed, we'll send you a full list of the equipment you'll need, bearing in mind that you'll be sleeping in tents for 2 nights. Throughout the expedition, you will be completely self-sufficient: you will need to pack everything you need in your rucksack.

What should I wear for this expedition?

It is important to wear neutral-coloured clothing. Any flashy coloured clothing (red/orange/apple green, etc) will attract the deer's attention and cause it to flee at the slightest visual contact.

Do I need to have bivouac experience to take part?

No previous experience of bivouacking is required, but you should be comfortable with the idea of spending the night out in the open, so there are no extra facilities. We'll guide you every step of the way to teach you the basics of bivouacking. You will sleep in a two-person tent, to be shared with another participant depending on the composition of the group.

Are instalment payment options available?

Yes, that's right! At checkout, you can choose the Alma option to pay for your booking in 2x, 3x or 4x. All you have to do is select Alma at checkout and follow the instructions. It's simple, fast and secure.

Can I privatise this expedition for my group?

Yes, all our expeditions can be privatised for a group already formed, on the dates of your choice.

To make your request, go to the expedition that interests you and click on "Privatise the expedition". We'll take care of the rest!
