Itinerary

DAY 1 / 3
Night
Auberge

We'll be meeting in Echternach from 6pm. At the inn, over a convivial dinner, we'll meet our guide Thierry, a passionate and experienced mountain leader.

DAY 2 / 3
Night
Auberge
Distance
20km
D+
900m

On the second day, we'll leave Echternach via the bridge over the river Sûre, and we'll be in Germany in no time! We'll then take the Mathiasweg, an old pilgrimage route that runs from Aachen to Trier, where the tomb of the apostle Saint Matthias is located. After a steep climb of around a kilometre, we come to the Liborius chapel, from where the view over the valley is superb. Nearby, we pass a small rocky hermitage where monks lived until the 18th century.

Next, we follow the impressive sandstone cliffs. This passageway has been used for centuries, as evidenced by a number of engravings, some of which date back to Roman times. Descending slightly, the path takes us to the superb Château Weilerbach, once the summer residence of the abbots of Echternach Abbey. Take a break in the magnificent castle grounds! Before the path climbs slightly back up to the plateau, a very old monument dedicated to Diana the Huntress will intrigue us. What happened to the upper part of this statue? We then reach Bollendorf, where we can have a picnic on the banks of the Sûre before returning to Luxembourg. We then reach Grundhof via a cycle path that follows the valley. A final climb takes us to the Beaufort youth hostel.

DAY 3 / 3
Distance
17km
D+
700m

On this last day of our adventure, we start the day by discovering the two Beaufort castles, then make our way through the moss-covered rocks along the small Houpeschbach stream, which we follow to its confluence with the Ernz Noire. From here, a short climb takes us into the heart of Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, a truly incredible place of sandstone cliffs, some over a hundred metres high, with narrow fissures where you sometimes have to step aside to pass. The origin of these cliffs dates back to a distant time, 200 million years ago, when the region was covered by a shallow sea.

Along the way, we'll discover numerous rock formations with mysterious names, linked to tales and legends. The vegetation will also be very distinctive, with ferns and pines reminiscent of lands further south in Europe. There's no shortage of places to picnic with magnificent views over the valley of the Black Enrz.

There's something to see at every turn along the way! We then pass through the small village of Berdorf before descending to Hohlay, a former millstone from which millstones were extracted not so long ago. In a fairytale setting, the trail passes splendid spots such as the Labyrinth and Perekop, improbable rocky prominences. We then return to the calm of the path, which takes us to the Gorge du Loup, another magnificent sandstone cliff, but with a high concentration of limestone giving it a distinctive yellowish hue.

Finally, the trail takes us gently back to Echternach, where we bid farewell to this unique experience.

I'm passionate about touring in all its forms. Having hiked in a good forty countries on five continents, awareness of climate change has made me narrow my field of action to everything that is accessible from home without using planes and when possible using public transport. As a serial traveller, I like to know where I'm going. The history of places is very important to me, and I enjoy passing on my knowledge.

Frequently asked questions

How comfortable are the rooms?

The gîtes offer a certain level of comfort: you will sleep in a single bed in a room shared with the other participants. Blankets and pillows are provided, but it is advisable to bring a sleeping bag for reasons of hygiene. There will be heating, showers and electric sockets.

Will I have to carry a rucksack on the various hikes?

Yes, we don't plan to carry any vehicles, so you'll have to carry your rucksack as we'll be sleeping in different accommodation every night. However, the rucksack should not exceed 5 to 7kg as blankets and pillows will be provided by the hostels. You'll also be sampling the cuisine of the accommodation every night, so you won't need to carry any food with you on the hikes.

How many kilometres will I have to cover?

You'll cover 20km on the first day and 17km on the second. The last day is shorter in distance, so you can take the time to explore the cliffs, which are truly exceptional, with the occasional opportunity to wander through labyrinths.

What can I do if the dates don't suit me?

If none of the proposed dates suit you, it is possible to privatise an expedition. All you need to do is form a group of at least 3 people, send us an e-mail with the dates you want, and we can organise the expedition for you!

Are dogs allowed on this tour?

Yes, dogs are welcome. However, please let us know when you make your reservation.

⛈ What happens if the metreo is wrong?

If the weather is bad but does not represent a danger to participants during the expedition, the activity will continue. If the weather becomes dangerous, the activity will be cancelled and replaced by an alternative offered by our professional guides.

What is included in the price of a DiscoveRent shipment?

At Wildhartt, we attach particular importance to price transparency for our shipments. Our approach is based on a clear breakdown of costs, aimed at providing a better understanding of the elements included in the total amount. Here's how we allocate the percentages:

  • 30% for our guides: We believe that our experienced guides play a crucial role in the success of each activity. That's why we make sure we allocate a significant proportion to pay for their expertise and supervision.
  • 35% for accommodation and food: We consider comfortable accommodation and quality food to be essential elements of an enriching experience.
  • 10% for equipment and transport: The safety and comfort of our participants is paramount. With this part of the total amount, we can guarantee that the equipment required is in excellent condition and adequate for each activity. Transport costs also come into play when they are essential during an expedition.
  • 25% for expedition participation and running costs: These costs cover the logistical, administrative and organisational aspects of the expedition, as well as the overall management of the experience, from start to finish.

Our aim is to provide you with a trustworthy, high-quality experience, while being transparent about how the final cost of your shipment is shared. If you have any further questions about our prices, please contact us here.

Can I privatise this expedition for my group?
