DAY 1 / 3
Accommodation
Bivouac
D+
300m
Distance
5km

Meet at 9.30am in La Fouillouse, a small hamlet at the end of the valley. We'll start with a short approach hike in an isolated valley with no road network, ideal for concentrating on learning. Along the way, we'll be talking about pace, effort management and the simple things you need to know to enjoy the mountains.

On arrival, you'll learn how to choose an effective bivouac site (terrain, exposure, wind, safety). The afternoon is 100% practical: setting up shelters with tarpaulins, water management, thermoregulation and lighting fires depending on the conditions. We finish with the collective installation of the camp and a hot meal, before a first night under the stars.

DAY 2 / 3
Accommodation
Bivouac
D+
800m
Distance
8km

After a debriefing on the night, we prepare the route together on the map: heading for the heights, between 2400 and 2800 m depending on the conditions.

The climb alternates between alpine clearings and more open passages, with panoramic views revealed as the effort progresses. The pace is steady, with breaks to work on orientation (compass), effort management and reading the terrain.

Today's objective: to set up a bivouac at altitude and learn to manage our autonomy when the going gets tough (cold, wind, resources). At the end of the afternoon, we set up camp, cook together and enjoy a real mountain evening, simple and intense.

DAY 3 / 3
D+
800m
Distance
8km

Today, we're aiming for a more 'grand décor' day, near Lac Premier and Lac des Neuf Couleurs.

The idea is to consolidate what you've learnt: efficient progress, orientation, choosing breaks and managing your comfort at altitude. We'll take advantage of this stage to observe the alpine flora and understand how the environment changes with altitude.

Progress is made over a variety of terrain (mountain pastures, stony paths, ridges), without trying to perform. At the end of the day, we'll be back at La Fouillouse and it'll be time to say goodbye.

⏱️ Distances, gradients and activity times are given as a guide only and may vary according to the weather, conditions and the pace of the group.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this expedition for?

This expedition is for people who want to learn how to bivouac in the mountains independently, calmly and responsibly. It's ideal if you already hike and want to go further: understand how to choose a good camp, manage water, the cold, effort and orientation, without seeking performance. No previous bivouac experience is necessary.

What is the aim of this course?

This course is not designed to put you in critical or extreme situations. Our aim is not to push you to your limits, but to teach you how to move intelligently in the mountains, using the right equipment. Comfort, safety and understanding of the environment are our priorities. The aim is for you to come away with concrete skills, not with the idea that "the harder the better". You'll leave with a solid foundation for bivouacking in the mountains on your own, a better understanding of your equipment, and more confidence in your decisions in the field. Above all, you'll have an immersive, educational experience that will make you want to go back on your own or in a group, better prepared and more confident.

What equipment is provided or can be hired on site?

You can hire most of the technical equipment needed for the course. This includes a duvet, mattress, meat bag, rucksack, shelter kit with tarpaulin, rope and pegs or stones, headlamp and survival blanket. This means you can take part even if you're not yet equipped, or if you want to test out some equipment before investing.

Will I learn to use my own equipment?

Yes, clearly. One of the main aims of the course is to teach you how to use your equipment in the best possible way. Setting up a shelter efficiently, managing your thermal insulation, organising your bag, choosing what's really useful and what's not... Everything is designed so that you understand why you do things, and not just how to do them.

Are instalment payment options available?

Yes, that's right! At checkout, you can choose the Alma option to pay for your booking in 2x, 3x or 4x. All you have to do is select Alma at checkout and follow the instructions. It's simple, fast and secure.

Can I privatise this expedition for my group?

Yes, all our expeditions can be privatised for a group already formed, on the dates of your choice.

To make your request, go to the expedition that interests you and click on "Privatise the expedition". We'll take care of the rest!

  • 35% for accommodation and meals, essential for your comfort.
  • 10% for equipment and transport, to guarantee safety and fluidity.

What happens if the weather is bad?

At Wildhartt, nature is our playground, rain or shine. Rain, snow or wind: our guides adapt the itinerary, activities and accommodation to guarantee you the best possible experience.
Unless safety is at stake (storm, avalanche, flood...).

In this exceptional case, we can cancel an expedition, at least one week before departure.
If this happens:
→ You can postpone your adventure at no cost,
→ Or receive a full refund.

What kind of people usually join Wildhartt expeditions ?

You don’t need to be a top athlete or mountain expert to feel at home. Most Wildhartt participants are between 25 and 60 years old, with a balanced mix of women and men.

Many join solo or in small groups of two or three. They often live in cities and are looking for a meaningful brea some time to reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy something real.

They usually have a regular movement practice (hiking, running, yoga...), but not with a competitive mindset. They’re in good shape, but don’t necessarily have technical skills. What brings them together is a shared desire to disconnect, observe, learn, and experience nature in a more grounded, accessible way.

If that speaks to you, you'll feel right at home. The group spirit is kind and open, and the pace adapts to everyone.
