We start our route in a bivouac at Clelles station, which is accessible by train, and review the organisation of our packs so that we can walk for several days. We walk along a small canal to the village of Chichilianne, where the terrain is easy enough to allow us to adjust our loads and pace before the climb. After lunch in the village, the route climbs through a high-altitude forest towards the Hauts Plateaux and the Pas de l'Essaure, the gateway to the nature reserve. Along the way, we'll be looking at Mont Aiguille from different angles and working to identify water sources, sheltered areas and bivouac sites suited to the plateau. At the end of the day, we all chose a flat spot to set up our first bivouac: putting up tents, managing water and cooking on the stove. The atmosphere was one of practical initiation, with controlled progress and exchanges within the group to learn the basics of bivouacking at altitude.

We set off from the Pas de l'Essaure to reach the Pas de la Selle, an undulating traverse of the Hauts Plateaux reserve that alternates between large high-altitude meadows, ridges, valleys and steep cliffs bordered by sparse forests of hooked pine. You will progress on foot in a guided group, working on reading the terrain, navigating in an open environment and using silent approach techniques to observe the fauna (chamois, ibex, tracks and footprints). Along the way, we'll identify areas that are ideal for observation and specific viewpoints, which will help structure our progress and provide time for educational stops. The afternoon is devoted to setting up the bivouac: putting up the tents, dividing up the tasks and having practical discussions about equipment and safety. If the energy is there, we climb a little above the camp for the sunset and, at nightfall, we go out briefly to listen to and spot the nocturnal life of the mountains. The aim of the day is to immerse the group in the wilderness and put into practice light self-sufficiency on the high plateaux, with a group dynamic and appropriate guiding to make the experience accessible.

We get up early to watch the sunrise over Mont Aiguille, then leave the high plateaux to follow the northern slopes of Mont Inaccessible. The day alternates between climbs on footpaths and mountain passes - the Col des Pellas and Col de Papavet - where you can observe in situ the unique geology of the massif and its relief. Educational progression: you learn to read the signs of the landform and adapt your pace to the combe terrain and grassy slopes. We cross the hamlet of Trézanne, a practical opportunity to manage equipment, take breaks and talk about local history. The final descent takes you through a valley and along balcony paths to Clelles station, completing the loop. An accessible pace, present guiding and time set aside for explanations make this day a structured transition dedicated to understanding the terrain.

What kind of people usually join Wildhartt expeditions ?

You don’t need to be a top athlete or adventure expert to feel at home. Most Wildhartt participants are between 25 and 60 years old, with a balanced mix of women and men.

Many join solo or in small groups of two or three. They often live in cities and are looking for a meaningful brea some time to reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy something real.

They usually have a regular movement practice (hiking, running, yoga...), but not with a competitive mindset. They’re in good shape, but don’t necessarily have technical skills. What brings them together is a shared desire to disconnect, observe, learn, and experience nature in a more grounded, accessible way.

If that speaks to you, you'll feel right at home. The group spirit is kind and open, and the pace adapts to everyone.

What does the price of a Wildhartt adventure include?
