Itinerary

DAY 1 / 7
Night
Gîte
The programme
Arrival in Finnmark

We arrive late afternoon in Vadsø, in the heart of Finnmark, the wilderness of Lapland. On arrival at the airport, we are met by our guides, Baudouin and Jan.

After a short transfer, we arrive at our gîte: Jan's, your host for the week. After setting down our belongings and taking a moment to settle in, we'll enjoy a welcome dinner prepared by Jan, our first opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local culture. Over dinner, our guide Baudouin will introduce us to the week.

The evening draws to a close and it's time for a good night's rest. Tomorrow, the adventure begins in earnest!

DAY 2 / 7
Night
Gîte
The programme
Sled dog

After a hearty breakfast, we pack everything we need: boots, wetsuits and accessories - everything is provided to ensure we're perfectly protected against the elements.

We start the day by testing our equipment and meeting our future travelling companions, the dogs. These faithful four-legged companions, full of energy and character, are eager to get to know each other.

In the afternoon, our dog-sledding adventure begins in earnest. Jan and Baudouin introduce us to the basics of mushing. We harness up our dogs and prepare to glide across the vast snow-covered plains.

As night fell, we set off, guided by the light of our headlamps. This will be our first experience of dog sledding under the stars.

After this first loop, we return to our host Jan's chalet, where a roaring fire is already crackling. Dinner, shared in the warmth of the chalet, seems to have never been so well deserved. The evening continues in a convivial atmosphere, perhaps over a game of cards or in the sauna. And if we're lucky, we'll be able to look up into the sky to admire the first aurora borealis dancing above us.

DAY 3 / 7
Night
Refuge
The programme
Sled dog

We share breakfast together before getting down to the day's chores: feeding the dogs and preparing the dog teams. Everyone pitches in to make sure everything is ready for the day's adventure ahead.

We then set off for our full day's dog sledding, crossing the Varangerbotn nature park. This protected park is characterised by vast expanses of snow, giving the impression of being lost in the heart of the Arctic. We make our way through this landscape, enjoying the silence and the white immensity.

For lunch, we stop off in the middle of these snowy expanses for a picnic. This is an opportunity to regain our strength before setting off on the next leg of our journey to our evening destination: a remote mountain refuge.

Once we arrive at the refuge, everyone will help with the daily chores of feeding the dogs, melting snow for water and chopping wood for the fire.

DAY 4 / 7
Night
Gîte
The programme
White peach

We return to our carriages and head for a frozen lake, where we'll try our hand at ice fishing.

Ice fishing involves cutting a hole in the ice to reach the water below, where we hope to catch a few fish and cook them. This is a traditional practice in Lapland, requiring patience and a good deal of know-how.

We then finish our itinerant loop with our dogs towards Jan's chalet, where the adventure originally began.

DAY 5 / 7
Night
Gîte
The programme
Visit Saami reindeer farm

After our touring dog sledding adventure, you can explore the local culture by visiting a Saami reindeer farm, or simply relax and enjoy a well-deserved rest at our lodge, Jan's House.

If you choose the second option, you'll have the chance to immerse yourself in the daily life of Jan's farm.

DAY 6 / 7
Night
Refuge
The programme
Cani-rando and lavvu

We're off on a unique cani-rando experience. With Baudouin's dogs to guide us, we let ourselves be carried through snow-covered landscapes on snowshoes for a few kilometres.

Our destination is a traditional Saami cabin, where we will spend the night. Once there, we set up our lavvu, a traditional tent used by Saami nomads. We prepare dinner outside, taking the opportunity to try our hand at cooking in the wilderness. We spend the night in a traditional Saami cabin close to our lavvu, where we can sleep in the warmth.

DAY 7 / 7
The programme
Cani-rando

Already our last day of adventure.

We're heading back to Jan's house on snowshoes, accompanied by our faithful dogs for one last cani-rando session. It's a chance to take in the snow-covered landscape one last time and enjoy the close bond with our four-legged companions.

Back at Jan's house, we round off this intense week with a hearty meal. Afterwards, we relax in a traditional sauna, perfect for recuperating after days spent in the great outdoors. Finally, our guides take us to Vadsø airport, marking the end of this unforgettable adventure.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment should I take with me on this expedition?

Once you have completed your registration, you will receive a detailed list of the clothing and accessories you will need to bring with you. We provide all the technical equipment specific to the expedition, as well as wetsuits and cold-weather footwear, which means that you will only need to bring your own personal clothing and any accessories such as external batteries and a headlamp. In addition to the items provided for the expedition, here are a few recommendations to help you prepare: Clothing: Thermal underwear (top and bottom): essential for staying warm. Wool or fleece mid-layers: several layers to adapt to the temperature. Waterproof and windproof winter jacket: to protect you from the wind and bad weather. Waterproof winter trousers: wind- and snow-resistant. Warm hat: ideally made of wool or fleece, with good ear coverage. Warm gloves: with a wool or fleece lining. Waterproof mittens: to be worn over gloves for added protection. Wool/fleece scarf or choker: to protect your neck from the cold. Thermal socks: several pairs, preferably made of wool. Change of underwear: enough for the duration of your stay. Comfortable evening clothes: for relaxing in the gîte or cabin. Warm pyjamas: for nights out and under the shower. Optional but recommended: Neck warmer/masks: to protect your face from the intense cold. Books or card games: for evenings by the fire. External battery.

Will I be looking after the dogs?

Yes, during your stay, you'll be fully involved in the day-to-day life of the camp. You'll take part in various tasks, such as fetching water from the well, feeding the dogs and even helping to prepare meals. The atmosphere at Jan's is warm and communal, with everyone contributing to the well-being of the group.

How comfortable is the gîte?

During your stay, you'll be staying mainly with Jan, in his guesthouse on the edge of a fjord, in the heart of the Varangerbotn nature park. This typical Swedish cottage is particularly popular for its warm, authentic atmosphere. It also has a traditional sauna, perfect for relaxing after a day of adventure. You will be accommodated in single beds in a room that will accommodate your small group of 6 participants. On certain nights, you will also have the opportunity to sleep in a mountain refuge. These refuges are traditional dwellings, generally used by the Saami to look after the reindeer in summer. They are basic but functional, with bunk beds and a wood-burning stove to heat the room. These refuges offer an unusual experience in an isolated setting, with a unique chance to admire the Northern Lights far from any light pollution.

Will I be driving the sleigh during the expedition?

Yes, you'll have the opportunity to drive your own sled during the expedition! Several types of outings are planned to allow you to enjoy different experiences: Solo outing: You will drive a sled on your own, pulled by 4 dogs, giving you total autonomy and complete immersion in the wilderness. Two-person outing: You will share the experience with another guest in the sled, pulled by 6 dogs, alternating between driving and enjoying the scenery from the comfort of the basket. For the more experienced and confident participants, a special session will allow you to test drive a sprint competition sled. These sleds are lighter and allow the dogs to move at high speed, offering a thrilling experience. However, this experience will be reserved for the more accomplished and those with a good command of driving.

Do I have what it takes to take part in this expedition?

This expedition is accessible to anyone in good physical condition, even those with no previous experience of sled dogs. Our experienced guides Jan and Baudouin will be with you all the way, teaching you the basics of mushing and helping you every step of the way. A willingness to experience an adventure in the great outdoors is essential!

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?

The best time to see the Northern Lights in Lapland is from November to March. Between mid-December and mid-February it's polar night, so there's very little daylight. Finnmark is the best region in Europe for viewing the Northern Lights.

How will my bag be transported during the dog sledding trip?

During the dog sledding expedition, you won't need to carry your own bag. All your personal belongings will be placed in waterproof bags and transported directly onto the sled, along with the equipment needed for the expedition. Each sled is equipped to carry not only your bag, but also all the safety equipment, food for the dogs and participants, as well as additional equipment such as sleeping bags or a change of clothes. This means you can travel light and concentrate fully on driving the sled and enjoying the scenery.

⛈ What happens if the metreo is wrong?

If the weather is bad but does not represent a danger to participants during the expedition, the activity will continue. If the weather becomes dangerous, the activity will be cancelled and replaced by an alternative offered by our professional guides.

What is included in the price of a DiscoveRent shipment?

At Wildhartt, we attach particular importance to price transparency for our shipments. Our approach is based on a clear breakdown of costs, aimed at providing a better understanding of the elements included in the total amount. Here's how we allocate the percentages:

  • 30% for our guides: We believe that our experienced guides play a crucial role in the success of each activity. That's why we make sure we allocate a significant proportion to pay for their expertise and supervision.
  • 35% for accommodation and food: We consider comfortable accommodation and quality food to be essential elements of an enriching experience.
  • 10% for equipment and transport: The safety and comfort of our participants is paramount. With this part of the total amount, we can guarantee that the equipment required is in excellent condition and adequate for each activity. Transport costs also come into play when they are essential during an expedition.
  • 25% for expedition participation and running costs: These costs cover the logistical, administrative and organisational aspects of the expedition, as well as the overall management of the experience, from start to finish.

Our aim is to provide you with a trustworthy, high-quality experience, while being transparent about how the final cost of your shipment is shared. If you have any further questions about our prices, please contact us here.
