End the year by spending a night in an igloo, for a real adventure!
In the morning, step out of your igloo to watch the very first sunrise of the year, still warm in your sleeping bag.
Prepare and share New Year's Day breakfast in the snow, the perfect way to start the year in the mountains.
Enjoy a two-day adventure open to all, the perfect way to discover snowshoeing and spend an extraordinary New Year's Eve.

    Meet at 1.30 pm at Bar Le Belvédère, in the hamlet of Ventelon in La Grave. After a welcome drink, the guide will outline the trip, go over the safety instructions and explain the equipment: snowshoes, poles, avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe.


    We’ll then head to Le Chazelet, the starting point for the hike, where you’ll also collect the equipment needed to spend the night in an igloo. The ascent is a gentle one, winding through woodland and across snow-covered slopes, to the campsite with La Meije as a backdrop.


    On arrival, everyone helps to set up their igloo under the guide’s guidance. Then it’s time for New Year’s Eve: together we prepare a festive dinner on the snow, featuring local produce, seafood, cheeses and flambéed desserts, accompanied by wine and champagne.


    The evening continues with a hot drink before we raise a toast to the New Year under the stars, then head back to our igloos for the night.

As a lover of the great outdoors, I was fortunate enough to pursue my passions for nature and sport from a very young age. After a spell with the 159th RIA Ski Scouts in 1988, I found myself working professionally from the age of 23. The foundation of this career path has always been clear: enjoyment, and the desire to share and pass on my knowledge. I love guiding and helping people to become self-reliant on treks, snowshoe walks, trail runs or fast hikes from my ‘base camp’ in La Grave.

Included

Guiding: Over these two days, you'll be accompanied by Patrick: an experienced guide who'll share his passion for the region with you.
Accommodation: You'll spend one night in an igloo or a winter tent.
Equipment hire: your guide will provide you with snowshoeing equipment (poles and snowshoes). A safety kit (avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe) will also be provided by your guide.
Equipment for spending the night in an igloo: sleeping bag, mattress, tarpaulin, etc.
Meals: The New Year’s Eve feast, featuring, amongst other things: salmon, scallops, prawns, wine and champagne! A proper festive meal in the heart of the mountains, as well as breakfast the following morning.

Not included

Transport to the meeting point and travel around the area (a short journey of a few kilometres).
A Sea to Summit Thermolite Reactor-style sleeping bag liner, or equivalent, to put inside the sleeping bag that will be lent to you for the night in the igloo, and a second pair of gloves for building the igloo.
The picnic on the first day is not included.

WHO IS THIS FOR

This trip is Level 1, easy, designed for anyone in good physical shape looking for an unforgettable way to spend New Year’s Eve, even without any snowshoeing experience.


You’re at the right level if:

  • You can manage 1 to 2 hours of actual walking, for a total outing of around 3 hours, with breaks
  • You can handle up to 200-300m of ascent
  • You can carry your own bag in semi-autonomy: just your day gear and your comfort items for the night in the igloo
  • You’re comfortable with the basic comfort of a night in an igloo (or a 4-season Samaya tent if snow cover is insufficient): limited warmth, tight sleeping space

What's it like getting around there?

The guide will provide a vehicle on site for part of the group. However, another vehicle will be required if the group is large.

What equipment do we need to bring?

Once your booking has been confirmed, we'll send you a personalised roadbook for your stay containing all the practical information, including a list of equipment to bring. Don't forget to pack several layers of warm clothing for the night in the igloo, as well as a spare pair of gloves and a sleeping bag liner to put inside the sleeping bag that will be lent to you for the night.

What happens if there's no snow?

We are, first and foremost, walkers, and even when there isn't enough snow, we still go ahead with our trips. The winter atmosphere and light are very much in evidence, and even if you have to carry your snowshoes for a bit or do without them at times, the scenery remains magnificent. So please make sure you have good walking boots. The night in an igloo will therefore be replaced by a night in a winter tent.

What is the difficulty level of this expedition?

This expedition is a Level 1 trek, suitable for anyone who wants to experience a wonderful adventure in the mountains to see in the New Year.

Do you really feel cold at night in the igloo?

The igloo insulates far better than you'd imagine: the snow blocks the wind and keeps the temperature inside stable at around 0°C. With the suitable sleeping bag provided, a warm sleeping bag liner (not included, to bring yourself) and several layers of clothing, the night stays comfortable. It's more basic than a regular bed, but the experience — and waking up under the stars — is well worth it.

What are the plans for New Year's Eve?

We're planning a proper festive meal; here's the menu: A warm, local alcoholic aperitif, 'La Bassine' / organic fruit juice This aperitif will be served with wild salmon, foie gras and tapenade on toast Starter: Scallop carpaccio with citrus fruits Main course: Wild prawns flambéed with pastis / mixed vegetables / rice Local cheeses Bananas and pineapple flambéed with rum Organic wine and champagne with the meal (1 bottle for every 4 people)

What kind of people usually join Wildhartt expeditions ?

You don’t need to be a top athlete or adventure expert to feel at home. Most Wildhartt participants are between 25 and 60 years old, with a balanced mix of women and men.


Many join solo or in small groups of two or three. They often live in cities and are looking for a meaningful break — some time to reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy something real.


They usually have a regular movement practice (hiking, running, yoga...), but not with a competitive mindset. They’re in good shape, but don’t necessarily have technical skills. What brings them together is a shared desire to disconnect, observe, learn, and experience nature in a more grounded, accessible way.


If that speaks to you, you'll feel right at home. The group spirit is kind and open, and the pace adapts to everyone.

What happens if the weather is bad?

At Wildhartt, nature is our playground, rain or shine. Rain, snow or wind: our guides adapt the itinerary, activities and accommodation to guarantee you the best possible experience.
Unless safety is at stake (storm, avalanche, flood...).


In this exceptional case, we can cancel an expedition, at least one week before departure.
