We’ll meet up at around 4 pm in Tromsø city centre: you’ll meet the group and your guide, Meryl. After a short briefing, we’ll collect our snowshoes and poles from our partner hire shop and check that our equipment is properly adjusted.

Once we’ve collected everything, a private shuttle will take us to our accommodation (a 30-minute drive), where we’ll quickly settle in.

The evening is spent getting ready: settling in, having dinner and perhaps catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights from the terrace of our chalet.

After a gentle start to the day, we set off from our accommodation and quickly make our way through the village before strapping on our snowshoes for the ascent to Natmalfjellet. The path climbs steadily up slopes where we can often spot reindeer and ptarmigan tracks in the snow.

Upon reaching the summit, the ridge offers a 360° view of the fjords and the surrounding landscape; we take the time to explain the geological processes that have shaped these valleys.

The day alternates between a leisurely walk, nature observations and informative stops, all guided by the guide.

We return to our chalet at the end of the day for a hearty meal and a debrief on this first day.

Today, it’s all about dog sledding! We head to the kennels – often setting off from Tromsø or from our accommodation by private shuttle – then we get kitted out and are given safety instructions and guidance on how to drive the sledge. It’s not just a leisurely ride: you’ll learn how to handle the sledge and the team, control your speed, brake and manoeuvre along the trail under the supervision of a musher.

The duration and route vary depending on the operator, but the day alternates between practical sessions at the start and longer stretches where you drive alone, with breaks to check on the dogs and swap drivers if necessary. The terrain typically consists of marked snow-covered tracks around the kennels and down into the valley, sometimes with faster sections; you adapt your driving to the conditions and the guide’s instructions. You return to the kennels for the dogs’ care and a debriefing, which brings the day to a clear close.

After breakfast at the chalet, we set off for a day’s snowshoeing, crossing a boreal forest (taiga) along recreational trails before beginning the ascent of Rødtinden. The ascent is steady along a path and over scree, covering around 10 km with a 500-metre climb; we proceed at a pace suited to the group, with breaks to drink and adjust our clothing.

As we reach the upper slopes, the islands and fjords come into view between the ridges; we take the time to observe and discuss the local geography. If snow conditions permit, we’ll descend off-piste down slopes of light powder snow, with the guides guiding us and helping us choose the routes and ensure safety.

The day ends at the original meeting point, with a return journey by shuttle and a brief debrief on the day’s events and the conditions encountered.

In the morning, we head up to the hills of Tromsøya by local bus or shuttle, depending on the timetable, then we set up the equipment we’ve hired from Tromsø Outdoor: backcountry cross-country skis and poles.

After a quick fitting and some technical instructions, you’ll learn the basics of Nordic skiing — gliding, pushing off, turning and stopping — on dedicated, easily accessible trails. The session alternates between guided exercises and free skiing to put what you’ve learnt into practice and adjust your posture.

Throughout the day, you progress at your own pace, with breaks to catch your breath and enjoy the views from the island’s ridges.

DAY6/ 7

We take the private shuttle at 9.30 am to reach the Sommarøy archipelago and return at 4 pm. Once there, we go on several short walks along the golden sandy beaches and amongst the islets, adapting the routes according to the tide and the groups.

During the stops, the guides point out points of interest and explain the coastal geology and local marine life. The terrain alternates between firm sand, smooth rocks and short climbs leading to headlands where we stop to take in the views and take photos.

It’s the last evening of the trip: we’ll get together to share a meal and, weather permitting, watch the Northern Lights.
DAY7/ 7
After one last night at the chalet, we take time for a relaxed breakfast before packing up and returning our hired gear (snowshoes, cross-country skis, cold-weather boots).

At around 10 am, a private shuttle takes us back to Tromsø, our original meeting point, where the expedition comes to an end in the late morning. You're then free to catch your flight or train home, or enjoy some free time in town before heading off.

Included

Guiding: Throughout your trip, you’ll be guided by an experienced polar guide who’ll be keen to share their passion and knowledge with you.

Accommodation: You’ll be staying in a traditional local chalet – cosy and comfortable – in a single or double bed (depending on the group’s composition). Sheets and towels are included.

Meals: All meals are included, from dinner on Day 1 to breakfast on Day 7. Meals will be prepared as a group, with everyone pitching in.

Rental of snowshoes and poles for the various walks listed in the programme.

A day’s dog sledding (2 people per sledge): guiding by a musher, provision of cold-weather clothing, and instruction on how to drive the sledge.

Nordic ski hire for the activity specified in the programme.

You should be at least 18 years old to participate

WHO IS THIS FOR?

You’re a hiker who’s used to winter days in the mountains and carrying a light to medium-weight rucksack.

You’re at the right level if:

You are able to walk for several hours at a stretch over snow-covered, ungroomed alpine terrain (up to 13 km and 600 m of ascent)
You do not suffer from vertigo
You’re prepared to live as part of a group and share in the tasks of communal living
You are able to spend the day outdoors in changeable weather, with temperatures potentially dropping to -20 degrees
You’re not put off by carrying a rucksack weighing up to 10kg on daily hikes

How comfortable are the rooms?

Throughout the week, you’ll be staying in a traditional local chalet with six comfortable bedrooms. Here’s how they’re laid out: there will be two double bedrooms – one with a bunk bed, two with a 1.40 m bed, and one with a standard bed.

How comfortable is the accommodation?

Inside, you’ll find a lounge with a large dining table, two large flat-screen TVs and a cosy sofa area, making for the perfect setting. There’s also a terrace where you can enjoy the incredible panoramic views of the fjord and the mountains from a spacious lounge area with plenty of comfortable seating. The chalet also features a bathroom with a shower and washbasin, a separate toilet and a utility room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Where is our accommodation located?

The chalet is situated 30 minutes from Tromsø, in the heart of a picturesque and peaceful setting overlooking the fjords, on the island of Kvaløya in Norway. During certain winter months, whales have been spotted in the fjords, and reindeer roam freely across the island almost all year round.

What’s the dog sledding experience like?

The activity lasts a full day (7 hours in total). We’ll start with a briefing and some guidance on best practice for driving the sled. Afterwards, the dog sled ride will last around two and a half hours, depending on the weather conditions (two people per sled, taking turns as driver and passenger). On your return, you’ll have the chance to unhitch your team before saying goodbye to your trusty dogs. A campfire will be waiting to warm you up; you can sit by it and share your thoughts on the ride whilst enjoying your packed lunch, accompanied by hot drinks and biscuits.

Are instalment payment options available?

What kind of people usually join Wildhartt expeditions ?

You don’t need to be a top athlete or adventure expert to feel at home. Most Wildhartt participants are between 25 and 60 years old, with a balanced mix of women and men.

Many join solo or in small groups of two or three. They often live in cities and are looking for a meaningful brea some time to reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy something real.

They usually have a regular movement practice (hiking, running, yoga...), but not with a competitive mindset. They’re in good shape, but don’t necessarily have technical skills. What brings them together is a shared desire to disconnect, observe, learn, and experience nature in a more grounded, accessible way.

If that speaks to you, you'll feel right at home. The group spirit is kind and open, and the pace adapts to everyone.

What happens if the weather is bad?

At Wildhartt, nature is our playground, rain or shine. Rain, snow or wind: our guides adapt the itinerary, activities and accommodation to guarantee you the best possible experience.
Unless safety is at stake (storm, avalanche, flood...).

In this exceptional case, we can cancel an expedition, at least one week before departure.
