Make your way between the narrow faults of the Perekop and the walls of the Labyrinth, a natural rocky chaos shaped 200 million years ago.
Cross the German border on foot over the Echternach bridge, walk up the Sûre valley, picnic in the gardens of Weilerbach castle, then sleep in Beaufort between two castles.

DAY 1 / 3
Accommodation
Auberge
We look forward to seeing you from 6pm in Echternach, in the heart of Luxembourg's oldest town. When you arrive at the hostel, you'll be welcomed by the group for a convivial dinner. This will be an opportunity to get to know Thierry, your mountain leader, who is passionate about the region and knows every nook and cranny of Luxembourg's Little Switzerland.

Thierry will take advantage of this first evening to present the programme for the next two days of hiking, answer your questions and prepare you for the subtleties of roaming in hilly terrain.
DAY 2 / 3
Accommodation
Auberge

900m
Distance
20km
We set off on foot from Echternach, crossing the bridge over the Sûre that marks the border with Germany. We then follow a section of the Mathiasweg, an ancient pilgrimage route between Aachen and Trier.

A short climb takes us to the chapel of Saint-Liboire, perched on a hill with a panoramic view over the valley. Right next to it, we discover a hermitage carved into the rock, a vestige of monastic life in days gone by.

The path continues overhanging the foot of impressive sandstone cliffs, decorated with ancient engravings. Below, a descent takes us to the Château de Weilerbach, the former summer residence of the abbots of Echternach. A welcome break in the castle grounds before continuing.

A peaceful forest path then leads us to a mysterious monument dedicated to Diana the Huntress, and on to Bollendorf, where we can enjoy a picnic by the river. We then cross the Sûre again to return to the Luxembourg side, towards Grundhof, and continue our walk along a gentle track to Beaufort.

We spend the night at the Beaufort youth hostel, after a day rich in history and scenery.

DAY 3 / 3
D+
700m
Distance
17km
After breakfast, we start the day with a visit to Beaufort's two castles, one medieval, the other Renaissance. We then head into the forest along the Houpeschbach stream, whose winding course guides us to its confluence with the Ernz Noire.

We then begin a gradual climb towards one of the most spectacular spots in the region: the sandstone cliffs of Luxembourg's Little Switzerland. Over 100 m high in places, they form a natural labyrinth punctuated by narrow passages, some of which you have to cross in profile. A geological universe dating back 200 million years, when the region was still under water.

The path winds through surprisingly southern vegetation, with pine trees, ferns and thick mosses. Along the way, we come across rock formations with evocative names, often linked to local tales and legends.

We then pass through the market town of Berdorf, before reaching Hohlay, an ancient millstone carved into the cliffside. Then come the Labyrinth, Perekop and the Gorge du Loup: all magical places with unexpected shapes, perfect for a picnic break with a view.

At the end of the afternoon, the trail winds its way back down to Echternach. We end our itinerary where it all began, after two days of exploration at walking pace, in a setting that is unique in Europe.

I'm passionate about touring in all its forms. Having hiked in a good forty countries on five continents, awareness of climate change has made me narrow my field of action to everything that is accessible from home without using planes and when possible using public transport. As a serial traveller, I like to know where I'm going. The history of places is very important to me, and I enjoy passing on my knowledge.

How comfortable are the rooms?

The gîtes offer a certain level of comfort: you will sleep in a single bed in a room shared with the other participants. Blankets and pillows are provided, but it is advisable to bring a sleeping bag for reasons of hygiene. There will be heating, showers and electric sockets.

Will I have to carry a rucksack on the various hikes?

Yes, we don't plan to carry any vehicles, so you'll have to carry your rucksack as we'll be sleeping in different accommodation every night. However, the rucksack should not exceed 5 to 7kg as blankets and pillows will be provided by the hostels. You'll also be sampling the cuisine of the accommodation every night, so you won't need to carry any food with you on the hikes.

How many kilometres will I have to cover?

You'll cover 20km on the first day and 17km on the second. The last day is shorter in distance, so you can take the time to explore the cliffs, which are truly exceptional, with the occasional opportunity to wander through labyrinths.

What kind of people usually join Wildhartt expeditions ?

You don’t need to be a top athlete or mountain expert to feel at home. Most Wildhartt participants are between 25 and 60 years old, with a balanced mix of women and men.

Many join solo or in small groups of two or three. They often live in cities and are looking for a meaningful brea some time to reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy something real.

They usually have a regular movement practice (hiking, running, yoga...), but not with a competitive mindset. They’re in good shape, but don’t necessarily have technical skills. What brings them together is a shared desire to disconnect, observe, learn, and experience nature in a more grounded, accessible way.

If that speaks to you, you'll feel right at home. The group spirit is kind and open, and the pace adapts to everyone.
