January to March
4 days| 3 nights
Level 2
Eco-score 4/5

What you will experience

Climb to l'Aiguillon, at an altitude of 2569 m, and discover three legendary mountain ranges: Chambeyron, Ubaye and Queyras.
Get a taste of winter in the Southern Alps: picnic in the snow-covered mountain pastures, the crisp air stinging your cheeks and the total silence of the peaks.
Spend your first two nights in a gîte in the hamlet of Fouillouse, a high-altitude village accessible only by a single road, surrounded by white peaks.
Walk along the former military corridor of the Vallonnet then cross the Pas de la Couletta at 2750 m to turn towards Italy, facing two valleys that open up at a glance.
Spend your last night at the Chambeyron Mountain hut, perched at 2600 m, with no warden and no modern comforts, the only luxury being a hot fondue and a sky full of stars.

We meet at 10am in the hamlet of Fouillouse, our base camp for the next four days. As soon as you set off, you'll be immersed in the atmosphere of the Southern Alps: wooden chalets, the silence of the mountains and the crisp winter air.

We then set off together along the Chemin du Mézin. All the way up, you'll discover Alpine flora and fauna in winter conditions. Your guide will help you recognise them and understand how these species adapt to the cold.

Around midday, we stop in the mountain pastures to share a picnic lunch overlooking the snow-covered peaks. In the afternoon, we continue to the summit of Aiguillon: a lookout point offering panoramic views of Chambeyron, Ubaye and Queyras.

At the end of the day, we return down to Fouillouse. Here you can relax in a cosy gîte and enjoy a good meal.

Note: For this first day, remember to bring your own picnic!

Today we're off on a wilder walk, with views of the surrounding ridges.

We'll head up the Vallonnet valley, a natural corridor that guides us towards the Italian border. Once up there, you'll discover the military remains that recall the history of this strategic area, perched between two countries. From this vantage point, you can also see the Oronaye valley, dominated by its lake and high rock faces.

After a well-deserved break to enjoy the scenery, we continue our descent towards Fouillouse.

The evening ends back at the gîte, with a good meal and a convivial moment.

It's time for the big adventure! After a hearty breakfast, we climb to the Chambeyron mountain hut, perched at almost 2600m. Only manned in summer, it opens its doors in winter in a more rustic atmosphere.

The climb takes us into a high-altitude setting, where snow carves the landscape and vegetation gives way to scree and rock faces. Once we arrive at the Mountain hut, we take our time to settle in and enjoy the surroundings.

In the evening, your guide prepares a fondue, perfect for regaining your strength and sharing a moment together. If the sky is clear, we'll be able to admire the stars.

After a night at altitude and waking up to the Chambeyron peaks, we visit the Chambeyron valley.

We then continue our hike towards the Pas de la Couletta, a high-level pass that allows us to switch to another side of the valley. From here, the view widens, offering panoramic views of the French and Italian valleys. The descent takes us back to the valley we discovered on the second day.

We return to the gîte at the end of our stay, with the feeling that we have immersed ourselves in the winter world of the Chambeyron massif.

The opinions of our participants who have placed their trust in us

Frequently asked questions

How comfortable is the Mountain hut, apart from the wardens?

The Chambeyron Mountain hut, when unguarded, is equipped with a charcoal stove, blankets, crockery and lighting. However, it has no cooking facilities or water. So it's up to us to provide a stove and a water supply. A truly authentic alpine experience!

Are there any evening activities?

Yes, depending on the weather: stargazing, sharing stories over a mountain meal, etc.

What happens if there's little snow?

We are first and foremost hikers, and when the snow fails we still ensure the departure of our trips. The atmosphere and the winter light are just right, and even if you have to wear snowshoes or do without them sometimes, the scenery is still splendid. So make sure you have good walking shoes.

Are instalment payment options available?

Yes, that's right! At checkout, you can choose the Alma option to pay for your booking in 2x, 3x or 4x. All you have to do is select Alma at checkout and follow the instructions. It's simple, fast and secure.

Can I privatise this expedition for my group?

Yes, all our expeditions can be privatised for a group already formed, on the dates of your choice.

To make your request, go to the expedition that interests you and click on "Privatise the expedition". We'll take care of the rest!

What does the price of a Wildhartt adventure include?

At Wildhartt, transparency is essential. The price of your expedition reflects a clear breakdown of costs:

  • 30% for our guides, the mainstays of every adventure.
  • 35% for accommodation and meals, essential for your comfort.
  • 10% for equipment and transport, to guarantee safety and fluidity.
  • 25% for organisation and logistics, from first contact to the end of the expedition.

Our priority: to offer you a quality experience, with complete clarity.

Do you have any questions? Contact us.

What happens if the weather is bad?

At Wildhartt, nature is our playground, rain or shine. Rain, snow or wind: our guides adapt the itinerary, activities and accommodation to guarantee you the best possible experience.
Unless safety is at stake (storm, avalanche, flood...).

In this exceptional case, we can cancel an expedition, at least one week before departure.
If this happens:
→ You can postpone your adventure at no cost,
→ Or receive a full refund.

What kind of people usually join Wildhartt expeditions ?

You don’t need to be a top athlete or mountain expert to feel at home. Most Wildhartt participants are between 25 and 60 years old, with a balanced mix of women and men.

Many join solo or in small groups of two or three. They often live in cities and are looking for a meaningful brea some time to reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy something real.

They usually have a regular movement practice (hiking, running, yoga...), but not with a competitive mindset. They’re in good shape, but don’t necessarily have technical skills. What brings them together is a shared desire to disconnect, observe, learn, and experience nature in a more grounded, accessible way.

If that speaks to you, you'll feel right at home. The group spirit is kind and open, and the pace adapts to everyone.
