Dog Sledding

Ride with huskies across the frozen Finnmark wilderness

December to March
7 days| 6 nights
Level 3
Eco-score 1/5

What you will experience

Cross the tundra of the Finnmark plateaux by sled dog, 22,000 square kilometres of unspoilt nature.
Drive your own husky pack across the wild plateaux of Finnmark, sleep in an isolated Mountain hut and break through the ice of an Arctic lake for ice fishing.
With Baudouin, a French-speaking musher guide with a passion for the Arctic, you won't just be following along: you'll learn to read the snow, talk to the dogs and live like a real musher.
Sleep in a Mountain hut with no water or electricity, in the heart of the taiga, where snow is melted for tea while outside, the aurora dances on the peaks.
Set up your lavvu in the snowy forest, cook around the fire, and sleep in a heated cabin while the dogs sleep rolled in powder.

Welcome in Finnmark
Meet at 5pm in Vestre Jakobselv, a small Norwegian village on the Barents Sea.

On arrival, your guide, Baudouin, will welcome you and take you to your accommodation: a traditional Norwegian hytte, located in a small campsite at the entrance to the Varangerhalvøya national park. This 1,800 km² wilderness park marks the border between tundra, sea and taiga.

Settle into your rooms, followed by a group welcome dinner, ideal for getting to know each other and finding out about the week's programme.

Sled dog
After breakfast, you'll be given your cold-weather gear (wetsuit, gloves, boots and hat). No detail is left to chance to protect you from arctic conditions.

The morning is devoted to meeting the Nordic dogs at the kennels. You'll learn how to harness a team and drive a sled: braking, positioning, communicating with the dogs, etc.

In the afternoon, you will set off on your first discovery loop on a sled, in a tundra setting. Return to the lodge at the end of the day for dinner and an evening by the fire. If the sky is clear, you may see the Northern Lights for the first time.
DAY 3 / 7
Accommodation
Mountain hut
On the programme
Sled dog
After feeding the dogs and preparing the teams, you set off for a day's sledging through Varanger Park. This unspoilt and little-visited region offers total immersion in the Arctic landscape.

Take a picnic break in the wilderness, then continue on to an isolated mountain hut in the heart of the plateaux. There's no electricity or running water here: everyone helps with camp life (melting snow, lighting the fire, feeding the dogs, etc.).

It's a simple, warm evening, in the typical atmosphere of Nordic expeditions.

Ice fishing
In the morning, set off on snowshoes to a frozen lake near the Mountain hut to try your hand at ice fishing: piercing the ice, setting up the line and perhaps catching some cod or Arctic char, the local species.

After this activity, return to the Mountain hut, where you will meet up with the sledges for a crossing back to the chalet. Another sledging session in the wilderness, and return to Vestre Jakobselv in the late afternoon.
DAY 5 / 7

Visit Saami reindeer farm
Today's highlight is a visit to a Saami reindeer farm, where you'll learn about the ancestral culture of the indigenous people of the Far North.

This is a great opportunity to meet these animals, emblematic of Lapland, and to talk to their breeders.
Afternoon free time and relaxation.
DAY 6 / 7

Cani-rando and lavvu
Today, you'll set off on a snowshoe trek with a dog harnessed to your belt, which makes walking easier by pulling slightly. You make your way through wooded tundra, with beautiful views of the Finnmark hills.

In the late afternoon, you arrive at a small traditional Saami camp. Set up a lavvu, a typical teepee-shaped tent, and have dinner together around the fire.

The night is spent in a heated hut close to the lavvu for added comfort.
DAY 7 / 7
On the programme
Cani-rando
Last morning cani-rando through snow-covered landscapes. Gradual return to Vestre Jakobselv, then back to the chalet for a final lunch together.

At the end of the afternoon, transfer to the bus stop for Kirkeness or Vadsø airport and end of your stay.

I'm passionate about animals, and dogs in particular, and have been mushing for over 10 years. Originally from France, I decided to move to Finnmark, in the north of Norwegian Lapland, to live out my passion for sled dogs to the full. I regularly take part in mushing competitions, which allows me to push my limits and perfect my skills. I'd be delighted to welcome you to my home, in the heart of the wilderness, to help you discover the fascinating world of mushing and share with you my love of dogs and nature.

What kind of people usually join Wildhartt expeditions ?

You don’t need to be a top athlete or mountain expert to feel at home. Most Wildhartt participants are between 25 and 60 years old, with a balanced mix of women and men.

Many join solo or in small groups of two or three. They often live in cities and are looking for a meaningful brea some time to reconnect with nature, slow down, and enjoy something real.

They usually have a regular movement practice (hiking, running, yoga...), but not with a competitive mindset. They’re in good shape, but don’t necessarily have technical skills. What brings them together is a shared desire to disconnect, observe, learn, and experience nature in a more grounded, accessible way.

If that speaks to you, you'll feel right at home. The group spirit is kind and open, and the pace adapts to everyone.
